Spelling Stars

Terms of Use

Effective date: 3 November 2026

These terms govern use of the Spelling Stars website and app at spelling-stars.sg, operated by Marcy's Lab Pte. Ltd. ("we", "us" or "our"). The family account holder is "you". Contact product.spelling-stars@marcys-lab.sg for support or questions about these terms. Marcy's Lab Pte. Ltd. is registered in Singapore (UEN 202635955R), at 60 PAYA LEBAR ROAD, #06-53, PAYA LEBAR SQUARE, SINGAPORE 409051.

1. Family accounts

Spelling Stars is a spelling and dictation practice service for children of primary-school age, roughly six to twelve, managed through an adult family account. A family account may be held only by a child's parent or legal guardian; tutors, schools and other organisations are outside this version of the service. You must have legal capacity to enter this agreement. When creating or managing a child's profile, you confirm that you are that child's parent or legal guardian, or act with that person's authority, and that you consent to the child's information being handled for the purposes explained in our Privacy Policy. We rely on that confirmation and do not verify identity or family relationships. Do not create or manage a child's profile without that authority.

Provide accurate account and recovery information, keep your sign-in credentials secure, and use family-device access carefully on shared devices. Children use profiles managed under your account, with a nickname, avatar and PIN. Notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.

The service has no regional access lock. Availability does not remove any mandatory protections that apply to you or your child in your country.

2. What the service provides

You can prepare learning lists and dictation passages, submit worksheet images for text extraction, assign practice and review results. The app uses generated speech to read learning material aloud. Features vary during development and may not always be available.

Automated text extraction and AI-generated speech can make mistakes. Review extracted material before saving it, and check pronunciations and learning content when something seems wrong. The service supports practice; it does not guarantee a particular score, learning outcome or alignment with every school's curriculum.

Roadmap features shown on the landing page are plans, not a promise of availability on a particular date.

3. Plans and usage limits

Spelling Stars has a Free plan, free for as long as you like, and a paid Plus plan (section 4). Each plan has limits, such as the number of children, lists, words and worksheet photos; they are shown on our pricing page and in the app. We also apply server-enforced limits to protect capacity, control generation costs and prevent abuse, which may limit registrations, uploads, generation requests or other usage. Limits may change as the service develops; we will explain relevant limits through the app or support where practical.

Do not circumvent limits by creating duplicate accounts, automating excessive requests or exploiting defects. We may reject or temporarily restrict requests that exceed limits or threaten reliable operation.

The service may contain defects, interruptions or changing features. Where practical, we will give reasonable notice of material changes and explain what happens to family data. Using the Free plan does not waive your mandatory legal rights or the commitments in our privacy and deletion notices.

4. The Plus plan: prices, payment, trial, renewal, cancellation and refunds

Plans and prices. What the Free and Plus plans include is shown on our pricing page. The price you pay is the one shown on the payment page before you pay. Prices are in Singapore dollars. We are not registered for GST, so no GST is charged. Plus costs the same whichever way you pay. Only the parent or guardian holding the family account can choose, change or cancel a plan; children never see prices or payments.

How payments work. Payments are processed by Stripe Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. ("Stripe") on Stripe's secure payment pages. We never receive or store your full card number. Card payments appear on your statement as SPELLING STARS; for PayNow, your bank shows Stripe Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. as the payee. Plus starts as soon as your payment is confirmed; during a free trial, Plus simply carries on.

Free trial. Each family may have one free trial of Plus. It lasts 14 days and needs no card: you start it on your Account page, and nothing is charged. A free trial allows up to 300 new words a month. We email you before it ends. If you do nothing, your family moves to the Free plan when it ends. A family that has had a trial, or has paid for Plus before, is not offered a trial, including after closing its account and registering again with the same email address within 12 months, unless we choose to allow one.

Continuing from a free trial. You can choose Plus at any time during a free trial, and you keep your remaining free days. By card, we save your card and charge nothing that day; the first payment of the plan you chose is charged the day after the free trial ends, and we email you its date and amount before then. Plus renews from then. If you cancel before the first payment, Plus continues to the end of the free trial and nothing is charged. By PayNow, you pay now and your 12 months start the day after the free trial ends.

Promotion codes. We may issue promotion codes that give a new family a free period of Plus with no card, on the same terms as a free trial. A code is used when you register, once per family, and counts as your free trial. It has no cash value, and we may withdraw it at any time. If a code can't be used, you can still register, and your family starts on the Free plan.

Extra months. If we add months of Plus to your plan, your end date, first payment or next payment moves out by those months, and later renewals stay moved. The price doesn't change and nothing extra is charged.

Cancelling. You can cancel a card plan at any time on your Account page. Cancelling stops future payments; Plus continues until the end of the period you have paid for, and then your family moves to the Free plan. You can undo a cancellation before that date. A PayNow year needs no cancelling: it simply ends.

Refunds. If you ask within 7 days of your family's first yearly payment, by card or PayNow, counted from the day you paid, we refund that payment in full and your family moves to the Free plan, and any free trial days left end with it. Otherwise payments are not refundable, including for part of a month or year, and cancelling gives no partial refund. To ask, email product.spelling-stars@marcys-lab.sg from your account's email address. Refunds go back to the way you paid; the time they take to arrive depends on Stripe and your bank. This does not limit any refund right you have under law.

Failed payments. If the first payment after a trial is declined, your family moves to the Free plan at once; we email you, and you can choose Plus again with another card. If a renewal is declined, your plan is past due and Plus stays for 7 days. We email you when the payment is declined, and usually again by your plan's last day. Unless the bank says the card cannot be charged, we try it again 1, 3 and 7 days after the first decline. Updating your card on your Account page takes the payment that is due at once. If we can't yet tell whether an earlier attempt went through, we make no further tries, send no reminder and don't charge a new card until we know, so that you are not charged twice. A try day that passes meanwhile isn't made up, and your 7 days don't change. If no payment succeeds by the end of the 7th day, your family moves to the Free plan, and we email you to say so.

Moving to the Free plan deletes nothing. Lists, words and results stay. Anything over the Free plan's limits waits, including children beyond the first, who are paused while you choose who practises, and comes back when you return to Plus.

Changes to prices or plans. We may change the price or contents of Plus. We will email you at least 30 days before a higher price applies to your plan. It applies from your first renewal after that notice, and you may cancel before then. A change never alters a period you have already paid for.

Deleting your account while on Plus. While a deletion is pending, no payment page can be opened, no trial starts, no payment is charged to a saved card, and we send no payment reminders or emails about a failed payment. A payment page opened before you asked for the deletion and paid while it is pending still gives your family Plus for the period paid; the deletion goes ahead as scheduled, and the refund rule above applies to that payment. When the deletion completes, your plan ends and Stripe's record of your saved card is deleted. Deletion does not by itself refund a payment already made.

5. Your content and permission to process it

You retain whatever rights you hold in material you submit. You grant Marcy's Lab the limited permission needed to host, process, reproduce and present that material to operate the features you request, including sending relevant images/text to service providers and creating speech audio. This permission is limited by our privacy and deletion commitments.

Upload only material you are entitled to use. A school's worksheet may be protected by copyright; permission to use it privately does not necessarily include permission to publish it for other families. Avoid uploading unnecessary personal information, especially details identifying children or other people.

Where optional catalogue sharing is available, choosing to publish gives other families permission to view the published words and passages and to adopt a copy for their own children's practice. Every published list is reviewed by us before it appears, and we may decline or remove it. The permission covers the learning material only, never child profiles or results. You can unpublish at any time, which removes the list from the catalogue; copies other families adopted before then stay with those families, with your name and any school or class labels removed, as the Data Retention and Deletion notice describes.

We retain rights in the app's software, design, branding and service materials. These terms give you permission to use the service for its intended family learning purpose, not ownership of the app. Nothing here assigns ownership of a child's personal data to us.

6. Acceptable use

You must not:

Report suspected security issues to our support email, without accessing or disclosing other families' data.

7. Privacy and service communications

Our Privacy Policy explains what information we process, why, and the providers involved. Data Retention and Deletion explains how account closure affects the whole family.

We may send communications needed to operate your account, respond to you, or explain security and deletion events. Any optional marketing or progress notifications must use the choices and consent process described when offered.

8. Closing your account

You can ask us to delete your family account at any time. Deletion is carried out seven days after confirmation; you keep ordinary access and can cancel at any time before then, by signing in, proving it is you and confirming that you want to keep the account. After permanent deletion begins it cannot be reversed. We may also close a family account that has no current subscription and has not signed in for six months; we email you first, and the same seven-day period applies from that notice. What deletion removes, and the few records that outlive it, are set out in the Data Retention and Deletion notice.

Contact support if you need help exercising deletion rights. We will verify your authority over the affected account.

9. Restrictions and service closure

We may temporarily restrict access where reasonably necessary to address suspected misuse, a security risk or a legal requirement. Where lawful and practical, we will explain the reason and provide a way to contact us about it.

An access restriction is not itself a silent request to erase your family's data. Permanent closure and data handling must follow the disclosed deletion policy and applicable law. If we discontinue the service, we will give reasonable notice where practical and explain the arrangements for your information.

10. Availability and responsibility

We aim to operate the service with reasonable care and skill, but we do not promise uninterrupted or error-free access. Networks, provider outages and maintenance can affect availability. Keep copies of original learning material you may need independently of the app.

To the extent the law allows, we give no guarantees beyond the commitments made in these terms and our privacy and deletion notices, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including lost profits, lost data or a child's results at school.

Our total liability to you for all claims connected with the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or wilful misconduct, or for anything Singapore law does not allow us to exclude, including your rights under consumer-protection and data-protection law.

11. Changes to these terms

We may revise these terms as the service develops. We will update the effective date and give reasonable notice of material changes where practical. Where fresh agreement is required, we will obtain it. Changes do not retrospectively remove accrued rights or existing accepted promotional commitments.

12. Governing law and concerns

These terms are governed by Singapore law, subject to mandatory laws and protections that apply where you live. Before making a claim, please tell us about the problem at product.spelling-stars@marcys-lab.sg and give us 30 days to put it right. Nothing requires you to give up access to a regulator, complaint process or court available under applicable law.

If a provision cannot be enforced, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.

These terms are written in English. If we offer a translated page or summary, it is for convenience, and if it differs from these terms, the English terms govern.
